Des Roar - The watchers

Click here to rid yourself of the nag.

The Detroit Cobras, Dan Sartain, Ty Segall, The Greenhornes.... all highly respected bands, agreed?

Gringo Starr, Doppelganger, Two Tears, Dead Sparrows... all bands you should know more about, agreed?

What does all of this name dropping aim to prove? Well, for one thing it proves that Des Roar has been quietly fluttering beneath the radar for quite some time touring constantly with these bands, but it has indeed been enough time for these NYC Rock N' Rollers to embed themselves within a scene so fickle it may dump you a minute after you ask it to the prom. Guess what? Des Roar have a whole bag of corsets to supply your little young frames with and nothing suffers because of it.

What we have here is a band that has made music from the standpoint that a glass of Powers whiskey atop a bar has. The glass of beautiful booze is looking out at the crowd and you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that it's making fun of you, but not in a mean spirited way. No dude... it just wants you to have a good time and it wants to get you laid. There is no difference between it and the music of Des Roar.
(Don't mind the Gorillaz-esque artowrk)

Like a tagged up locomotive this band rumbles down the track. Sure, they're not breaking any new ground, but they ain't no copy cats either. What we have here is a solid Rock N' Roll record from a gang of kids who've adopted the LES as their place to be for the past decade or so.

That's not to say that they've abandoned their West coast sunshine and surf roots... no way man. This entire record is equal parts sun, surf, and subway train. It's easily the soundtrack to fucking, fighting, drinking, and breaking up. In fact, I'd be surprised if some douche bag record company guy didn't make a slimy appearance at the next ten of their shows just trying to coerce them into signing the wrong type of deal where their tunes are lent to reality shows to give those show insta-cred, but Ben, Ryan, Lyla, and Alan know so much better. They know that money isn't king. They know that as customers of Rock N' Roll, they need to provide something a whole lot better than all the rest of the shit clogging up peoples Ipod's.

Folks, the Robot has NEVER given you a bad road to follow. I've covered this band in the past and have done so with no expectation of having people disagree. Hold on...

ATTENTION OH ROBOT READERS:

Enjoy The Watchers by Des Roar!

R.I.Y.L. Detroit Cobras, Jesus and Mary chain, The (old) Strokes, Ty Segall, and the like...

And don't forget to check Kloke Records here.
It's their first release and what a strong first release it is!

Courtesy of the technologically advanced, fine fellows over at NYC Taper, you now have the chance to hear a fantastic quality show by San Fran's favorite rockers. There isn't much else to say here because if you're here to begin with then you already know the deal. There are a few songs from the upcoming Warm Slime record too.

By the way, you should visit the NYC Taper site for loads of gems, but make sure you ask permission to redistribute because you don't want to be like me and get in trouble. Then, all of a sudden you'll start hanging around the wrong crowd, wearing leather, spitting at mirrors, and breaking pinball machines with your fists.

Again...NYC Taper I'm sorry I didn't follow the rules. Let's be friends. With the exception of my penchant for riding my bike inside of peoples apartments I'm a swell guy.

Des Roar - Mad Things

I've written about this band a dozen times since starting this blog. Coincidentally, I've drank about one hundred bottles of cheap liquor. The total is probably way more, but tonight I'm inclined to be modest. I could sit here and tell you that this is the greatest band in the world. I could also confess that each bottle has been a 1.75 liter, but I won't. I'm not here to bullshit you. I'm an honest man when it comes to this sort of thing. It's the only way to be. The truth is what I'm tellin' and I ain't tellin' no lie.

Des Roar makes the kind of music that makes people drink and have a good time. Whether you're fucking, fighting, kissing, or playing pinball. Whatever you wanna do, baby... it's fine. This shit is pretty good... where'd you get it?

In a time where so many bands are being "different" it's refreshing to hear a group that is delivering straightforward Rock n' Roll. It's all guitar and drums here folks. There's even a few boy/ girl harmonies thrown in. The handclaps are free too. Grab your beers. Get your boards. Call that chick and set up some bang time. This is the record that'll get you by tonight. It's right.

DES ROAR: Last night of the West Coast tour

The first thing I'd like to say here is THANK YOU to the band for putting on a bunch of great shows while they were out here on the west coast. The second thing I'd like to say will be directed toward the Roxy up on the Sunset Strip...

Des Roar at Silverlake Lounge.

Last night me and the crew decided to go down and catch Des Roar at the Silverlake Lounge. We were not disappointed. First off, it was good to see the gang again and it was plain to see that life on the road hasn't affected their mood. They were all just as drunk and ferocious as I recalled them to be. And much more.

In about 40 minutes they tore through a nice mixture of surf, garage, and the maniacal Rock N' Roll they've grown to perfect. Beginning with "The watcher" and ending the set with upcoming single "Watch your step" the crowd instantly knew that these NYC fuckers weren't just stopping by for a beer and polite conversation.

Enter the dueling guitars of wild Irishman Alan O' Keeffe and frontman Ben Wolcott, who has seriously upped his snarling intensity. Maybe being on the road has made them angry after all? They played with the brashness of a band that not only wanted to rock the house, but as a band that wanted to make sure that the sheer force of their music was going to crack a few ribs.

By the way, are you kids lifting weights? All of your arms looked like they were powerful enough to smash a beer cooler. As if that wasn't enough, their diminutive drummer Lyla ain't afraid to kick something after it's dead. For real.

During the last song, the aforementioned 'Watch your step', plenty of boys and girls in the crowd rushed to the dance floor and started doing the graveyard twist. (I have no idea what these kids call dancing today)

It was exactly what a Rock N' Roll show should be: Loud, fast, snotty, and raw. Can somebody please pick these guys up already!!?? Do yourselves a favor by grabbing a copy of Mad Things. You won't be sorry...

And Ryan, I still need a t shirt. You are my only hope.

*Thanks to Red Melanie for the photo.
You'll have to forgive me for not including pictures of the show. Honestly? I left the house pretty drunk to begin with and ended up forgetting my camera.

Covers time!

Good day folks, I'm sitting around cleaning up my computer and weeding out the tunes that really have no business being there such as the Fungi Girls and the Screaming Females records. I tried, but that doesn't mean I won't keep a look out for future stuff from those guys.

Anyway, while unearthing some stuff I inadvertently came across a few gems that I hadn't heard in a while. Among them was this little song folder with Ben from Des Roar covering two Strokes songs and one booze soaked original with a bit of that old country twang.

Speaking of Des Roar, they're playing the West Coast now and will be in LA on the 17th.

Enjoy!

Young People

A while back I posted their second album, War Prayers, and today I'm offering their first. There isn't anything groundbreaking going on, but it's one of those records that I just have to hear every once in a while.

Katie Eastburn and the boys straddle the fence between avant garde noise and straight forward indie rock, but their shining moment on this self titled record is called "Ne'er do well" Trust me. It's oddly catchy.

Random fact: This bands drummer, Jeff Rosenberg, was in Pink and Brown with John Dwyer of Coachwhips/ Thee Oh Sees fame.

Earlier in this blog I posted a Lou Reed 7" that was absolutely fantastic. Today is not going to be any different. This is some really jumpin' pre-Velevets stuff here. That said, it isn't ground breaking, but as always, it's cool to see what our heroes were doin'' before they became what they are today.

I ripped these from wax so you can dance in your shacks!

Interview with Ben from Des Roar.

L-R: Ryan, Ben, Alan, Lyla

I should begin this by telling you that Ben and I have been friends for many years now. We've played music together and between the two of us, have probably drank more alcohol than a tour bus full of Billy Joels. I know this because I have absolutely no memory regarding any adventure we've been on. Well... there was that one time where he passed out and we buried him beneath: Two bicycles, a tree, assorted books, a few guitars, a frying pan, some rock n' roll record albums, a statue of a labrador, and a human girl who later would attempt a wheelie across his lifeless body. All in all, the man knows how to party. That's not to say that he isn't a hard worker. Des Roar, the NYC band with whom he sings and plays guitar for, have just completed their debut long player, Mad Things. Besides working on that, they've been playing gigs nonstop and breaking hearts across the map. It's a wonder how we actually had the time to get this interview done at all.

Oh Robot: Hey man, it's good to finally talk to you. Let's be fake professionals here and try to remain sober while we do this. Okay? Introduce yourself to the people and describe your sound.

Ben Wolcott: Hello there. My name is Benjamin Charles Wolcott. I play guitar and sing in a band called Des Roar. We play Rock N' Roll music. I enjoy Powers whiskey by the bottleful. How's that so far?

Oh Robot: We're off to a grand start here, but I don't think I want to be sober.

Ben Wolcott: I've already taken a swig. Fi-yah!

Oh Robot: See? We're already getting off track. Tell me about the record.

Ben Wolcott: Well, it's called Mad Things and the eleven songs on it will take you about thirty five minutes to hear them out. The whole process took us a while to finish, but we're all pretty happy with the end result. I think that when the time comes for the next record to be recorded, we'll have less of a headache because we now know what not to do.

Oh Robot: Who writes the songs?

Ben Wolcott: I do the majority of the writing, but at some point or another we all give our two cents. It's just trying to figure out what works and what doesn't fit. I just try to play as much as possible. When I'm playing a lot, the songs just seem to come together easier. After I get one finished off I'll usually record it with a friend and listen to it a bunch. From there I'll make revisions. Maybe add a part here or take out a part there. Then, practicing the shit out of it kind of finalizes the song in terms of arrangement and instrumentation.

Oh Robot: How long have you been playing music? What inspired you to do it versus becoming let's say... a tennis champ?

Ben Wolcott: I was a really young kid and my parents were in a bluegrass band called Heaven's Mountain Band. I used to watch them practice all of the time and I'd get to tag along during the festivals they'd play. Also, when I was nine I played the Alto sax in my elementary school school band. I'm not sure how good it was though. As far as inspiration goes, I don't think you can be a drunken tennis pro. Music has just always been my thing. Without it I'd have a lot of free time on my hands.

Oh Robot: You guys are spending a bunch of your own cash to release the album. Are you worried about it leaking and getting served up all over the blogosphere?

Ben Wolcott: Something like that is totally out of our control so I don't think about it much. It's bound to happen though. It's a double edged sword, you know? You want people to be excited and hear the music, but at the same time you want to be able to not have to work a day job and just focus on making more music. We hope people will want to buy the record.

Initial wheelie perseverance test.

Oh Robot: What are some of your favorite albums?

Ben Wolcott: I really adore the first three Ramones records and Transformer by Lou Reed. Besides that, a lot of Chuck Berry and a great deal of the Beach Boys.

Oh Robot: Yeah, Transformer is an awesome record. I've got to see if I can dig up the cover of Perfect Day that we did. You know what though? We were pretty tanked that day and I'm not certain we actually pressed the record button. What are your favorite songs to play live these days?

Ben Wolcott: King of Kuffs is probably my favorite song to play right now. Also, there's a new song we did called Watch your step love. That one's about a bar doorman. It's easily one of my faves.

Oh Robot: If you could hand pick a line up of bands to tour with who would it be?

Ben Wolcott: Oh man, I'd love to hit the road with our good friends Gringo Star. Those guys are incredible. The Reigning Sound would be awesome. Detroit Cobras... Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and last, but not least The Warlocks. I have a lot of admiration for them.

Oh Robot: Have you guys had that "moment" where you knew that people were starting to take notice to what you guys were doing musically?

Ben Wolcott: We've got friends all over. Just the other day I was walking to work through the Lower East Side and from out of a patrol car I can hear Baby you're too young blaring from inside of it. Fuckin' mad things, these cops man.

Oh Robot: Who's in the band?

Ben Wolcott: We've got the lovely Lyla Vander on drum and vox, my longtime friend Mr. Ryan Spoto on the bass and vox, and the wild man Alan O' Keeffe on guitar and vox as well.

Oh Robot: Do all of you sing on this record?

Ben Wolcott: Lyla and I are the two main mouths, but yeah, we all open our traps at some point or another.

Oh Robot: I'm starting to feel tipsy so in honor of that I'm going de-professionalize this interview. Answer quick... New York or Los Angeles?

Ben Wolcott: Definitely New York! I fucking love this city!

Oh Robot: Beatles or The Stones?

Ben Wolcott: I've got to go with John, Paul, Ringo, and George. Although, I do love both bands.

Oh Robot: Sausage or bacon?

Ben Wolcott: Again, another tough call, but I've got to say bacon. I could eat it all day long. I actually have a wallet that's made to look like strips of bacon. I wish they actually made bacon scented candles or bath soap. I would buy it in a heartbeat. In terms of my favorite style of food? I'm going to say Italian and Mexican.

Oh robot: Are you currently in any other bands besides Des Roar?

Ben Wolcott: Nothing formal. Although I do play music with people outside of the bands. I'm constantly trying to get my friends to let me sit in on their practices. Not necessarily because I want to be in their bands or anything, but because I just love playing their songs.

Oh Robot: What's in store for the future? Are you guys going to do some heavy touring to promote the record?

Ben Wolcott: We just want to travel and play more. Play all day and all night. We also have loads of new songs. Maybe we'll put out a forty five or just start thinking about our second album. As far as touring goes, we've been playing NYC pretty much non stop. We'll be hitting the West Coast soon. Also, we've got some shows coming up in DC, Philly, and Connecticut. We're basically going to plug in wherever someone will have us. Maybe a few spots where they won't have us as well. Challenges are good.

Oh Robot: I noticed that you didn't mention Charlotte, North Carolina. Are you still weirded out by that guy that pulled a shotgun on you?

Ben Wolcott: Shit, I forgot about that guy. Yeah, he pulled out a gun and aimed it at us because we had finished our set and it was time to leave. We played that show with a band called Elevator Action. Coincidentally, none of us were hurt during our visit. That guy was kind of dodgy.

Oh Robot: Alright man...I think I've accurately captured what I needed to here. Although, my female readers might want to know who the ladykiller of the group is?

Ben Wolcott: That would be Mr. Ryan Spoto. He is an actual lady killer.

Wheelie test successful. Ben still sleeping.

I heart Des Roar!

Das Roar Bionic Ear Recording Session from Indie Rock Reviews on Vimeo.

It's been a minute since I've mentioned my good friends and Rock N' Roll partners, Des Roar, but I've been hipped to the news that their debut long player, Mad Things, is complete. So basically what I'm trying to say is that sooner than you think all of you kids are going to be twistin' in front of your record players en masse.

Contact the band should you have the urge to pick up an exclusive t-shirt designed by yours truly. It's the perfect tee to wear while stabbing your enemies... a lot. Through you should be careful... since Billy Mays passed away, I'm not sure OxyClean can get those pesky blood stains out of your American Apparel tees.

The worst part... these lazy bastards I count among my bestest of friends haven't given me one yet.

This set of songs was recorded very raw.
If you were able to get past that first sentence and you're still interested...well, then you've got a friend in me. This batch of tunes was recorded in the Hollywood Hills at the home of an actress, Eliza Dushku who is famous, but not widely known. She did offer shrimp that day though.

On the real though, she's nice.

An open letter to Razorlight...

Dear members of Razorlight,

I'm writing to you to claim the $500.00 you owe to New York City's 6th Ward Bar at 191 Orchard Street. Yeah, it's pretty sad that such a crappy band could walk into a place acting every bit the spoiled brat rock stars they pretend to be.

So cool you thought yourselves to be when you walked in. So tough you thought yourselves to be as you grew louder and louder. You thought the bartenders were your friends that night, didn't you?

Well, you are very wrong about that fellas. I'm not entirely sure that you have too many fans in NYC. One thing is for sure, you didn't have any fans at the bar last night, nor will you ever. Do you think the Detroit Cobras did anything lame when they dropped by and shut the place down to play pool and finish every bottle of liquor in the joint? Of course not, and guess what sillies...they are a Rock and Roll band. You should pick up one of their albums.

You acted like fools and were asked to leave. When you didn't, you were made to. This is good news for people who actually like rock and roll. What kind of music do you make anyway?

"Golden touch" was a fine song, true. After that though, sheesh...

I'm bored of this letter to you so if you can muster up the US dollars, please hand deliver your payment to the 6th Ward Bar. While you're there please feel free to apologize for your idiotic behavior.

The simple fact that you guys kicked a window out until it shattered only proves that you all deserve to be kicked until you shatter as well. But, being as the L.E.S. is the breeding ground of gentlemen, we'll forget that you sat in your stools singing praise to the band NOFX, trying to argue that they were the best band in the world. Keep on rockin' guys...

PS. You can also send a check., but we'd much rather have a face to face with you. You dig?

Sincerely,
a guy you've seen before and didn't like.

Des Roar show at Jordi Scott Los Angeles

http://sharebee.com/efca04e5

New song alert!

On October 13th I went to see Des Roar make their first Los Angeles appearance at the Jordi Scott fashion show in Hollywood. After about an hour of super strong white Russians being served up courtesy of Starbucks, the band began playing. They introduced a few newer songs during their set, but made plenty of room for some of their older staples like "Ted Bundy was a ladies man" and "Baby, you're too young"

These three boys and a lady did what they aimed to do. All they wanted was to come to the West Coast and speak the truth to the youth. As usual, they handed over a tight performance to the oddly grouped crowd. It was obvious that a lot of the people there were there just to see the fashion show, but those in the know definitely got a sweet treat.

Anyway, it was a well tuned evening, seeing as the band still hadn't completely recovered from disrupting the Roosevelt Hotel's pool area with a face punching, faux drowning display of Des Roarian charm which led to an eviction and one hell of a great buzz. It's weird to know that you caused such a ruckus that neighboring hotels call each other about it.

They played about ten songs, each chock full of blaring guitars and pounding bass lines. Looking like every bit the dirty rockers they are, the denim and leather was nicely offset by Lyla's flowing, elegant attire. Speaking of Lyla, no Des Roar song seems like it would be complete without her sweet cooing from behind the drum kit.

In closing, this band is definitely one to watch in 2009. They ooze everything that is good about Rock and Roll, booze, and well...booze.

For the life of me I can't figure out why this band isn't more well known. For all you though, you'd best get aboard the train to Blackoutville quick.

Please enjoy: The Ballad of Little Bangs and an alternate take of How much is too much.

*For some crap reason, and another shining example of how the computer Gods hate me, I'm unable to upload the video of this show from my video camera because my computer is like "Whatever man, I don't feel like watching it so I'm gonna shut down without warning. Okay?"
So, you'll have to be okay with the images above because that was all I could pull.

Here are some shots from a wild night of Des Roar debauchery. Photo credit to Lisa Thi-Beskar who seemingly takes awesome pictures all the time!

According to the gig report, there was a power outage in the first half of the set, but just when it seemed that all was lost, BANG! Rock and Roll happened and damn near started a riot too!

Click here for beer fueled seks.

I found this album while I was packing up and getting ready to move back to Los Angeles today. It was made by a friend of mine who used to get trashed at a lower east side bar I used to work at. His name is Zach Lipez. If the name sounds familiar, it's because he and Nick Zinner put out a little book called Slept in beds not too long ago. I'm not entirely sure what else he's been up to lately, but I can be certain about one thing...whatever he's doing, I bet he's the sharpest dressed motherfu**er in the whole room. For real.
